Objective To assess short-term efficacy of the combination of postural reduction andpercutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) in the treatment of compression fracture of vertebrain elderly patients with osteoporosis. Methods Data of31aged patients with compression fracture of thoracolumbar vertebrawere collected from our hospital from March2009to September2010.There were10males and21females with the age from65to89.In all of the cases,2cases were at T10,4cases were at T11,12cases were at T12,9cases were at L1and4cases were at L2.Underthe combination of postural reduction and PVP,31cases were reviewed via unilateralpedicle percutaneous puncture, statistical analysis was performed using statisticalpackage of social sciences13.0(SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA).The clinical effects wereevaluated by observing the charges of visual analogue scale (VAS),the Cobb angle andlocomotor activity scale (LAS).Results Low back pain disappeared or relieved obviously in all31cases postoperatively.VAS and LAS were reduced from a mean preoperative score of8.27±0.57and3.4±0.5to a mean postoperative score of1.80±0.78and1.3±0.2the first day afteroperation standing position or1.37±0.61and1.2±0.1six months afterwardrespectively (P <0.05).The Cobb angle was improved from25°±4.4°preoperativelyto13°±3.1°or14°±3.2°,the first day and six months after operation standingposition afterward respectively (P <0.05);differences of visual analogue scale(VAS),the Cobb angle and locomotor activity scale (LAS) were statistically significant between preoperation and the first day after operation, also between preoperation and sixmonths postoperatively afterward with t test. There were three cases got bone cementleakage,including1intervertebral leaks and2paravertebral leaks,no complications werefound. The duration of the follow-up was6~24months.There were no relapse of lowback pain and vertebra fracture during the follow-up.Conclusion The combination of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) and posturalreduction is an effective kind of minimally invasive surgery in treating single section ofthe fresh thoracolumbar vertebral compressive fracture in aged patients withosteoporosis. It is simple in relieving pain, recovering function and correcting kyphosis.
