Object:To investigate the different expression of mast cell(MC) and mast cell tryptase(MCT) among oral submucous fibrosis(OSF), oral lichen planus(OLP) and OSF coexisted with OLP, so as to discuss the role of MC and MCT in the pathogenesis of OSF with trismus and why OSF coexisted with OLP without trismus. Methods:We have prepared10cases of NBM,33cases of OSF(comprises of11initial,11medium-term and11advanced stage cases),15cases of OLP and15cases of OSF coexisted with OLP. The MC density and degranulated MC density were examined by immunohistochemical SP method, and calculated the proportions of degranulated MC. Then MC and MCT were compared among the groups in the expression differences of each index by statistics analysis.Results:(1) Initial OSF’s MC density(43.91±8.44piece/mm2)> NBM’s (29.80±6.20piece/mm2), showed significant differences (P<0.05). Initial OSF’s degranulated MC density(22.00±5.60piece/mm2)> NBM’s (13.60±4.03piece/mm2), showed significant differences (P<0.05).(2) For MC density, initial OSF> medium-term OSF(25.45±6.55piece/mm2)> advanced stage OSF(0piece/mm2), showed significant differences between any two(P<0.05). For degranulated MC density, initial OSF> medium-term OSF(9.63±2.58piece/mm2)> advanced stage OSF(0piece/mm2), showed significant differences between any two(P<0.05). For proportions of degranulated MC, initial OSF (49.61±4.17%)> medium-term OSF (38.03±4.64%)> advanced stage OSF (0%), showed significant differences between any two(P<0.05).(3) For MC density, OSF coexisted with OLP(79.27±9.21piece/mm2)>NBM and OSF coexisted with OLP> all OSF stages, showed significant differences (P<0.05); OSF coexisted with OLP<OLP(95.67±12.58piece/mm2), showed significant differences (P<0.05). For degranulated MC density, OSF coexisted with OLP(38.20±6.79piece/mm2)>NBM and OSF coexisted with OLP> all OSF stages, showed significant differences (P<0.05); OSF coexisted with OLP<OLP(53.00±12.85piece/mm2), showed significant differences (P<0.05).Conclusions:(1) MC and MCT were closely related with inflammatory occurred of OSF initial stage.(2) The changes of MC and MCT might attend the relevant clinical manifestations and pathological changes in medium-term and advanced stage of OSF.(3) The quantity of MC and MCT maintained at a certain level might lead to the signs of no fiber cord and trismus in OSF coexisted with OLP patients’oral.
