Objective To investigate the relationship between the levels of plasma totalhomocysteine(Hcy) and the extent of damage and location of ischemic leukoaraiosis inelderly patients; Methods Ninety-nine cases of ischemic LA were studied. They were diagnosed byMRI. After imaging classification, they were divided into groups of mild damage, moderate damage and severe damage. The levels of plasma total Hcy of the patientswere measured, and compared between different groups. Results Plasma Hcy levels of the patients with ischemic LA were significantly relatedwith severity of LA. The differences in smoking, hypertension and lacunar braininfarction between three groups were statistically significant(P<0.05).The levels oftotal Hcy were negatively correlated with serum levels of folic acid and vitamin B12.Conclusion1、The increased1eve1of plasma Hcy was significantly associated with the age;2、The increased1eve1of plasma Hcy and the declined1evels of both serurn folicacid and vitamin Bl2were related to the extent of damage and location of ischemic LA;3、The levels of total Hcy were negatively correlated with serum levels of folic acid andvitamin B12;4、Folic acid and vitamin Bl2should be used for intervention of plasma Hcy in order toreverse and control the development of ischemic LA.
