A Randomized Trial Of The Comparing Oral And Vaginal Misoprostol Following Mifepristone Administration For Termination Of8～16Weeks’Gestation

ObjectiveThe study was to compare the effectiveness and safety of oral or intravaginal misoprostol following mifepristone administration to terminate8-16weeks’ gestation.Materials and MethodsEighty patients, requesting legal termination of pregnancy at gestational age between8and16weeks were from the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University between April2011and February2012. They were arranged randomly into two groups. Both40women (group1) and40women (group2) received100mg of oral mifepristone every24h for two days. Then, the group1were given400μg misoprostol orally at5am on the third day every3h up to a maximum of four doses and the group2received600μg misoprostol vaginally at5am on day3every6h up to a maximum of four doses.ResultsThe successful abortion rate for group1and group2were100%and97.5%respectively,there were no significant differences (P>0.05).The difference in mean induction abortion interval was also statistically insignificant between the two groups (6.5±4.0h vs.6.4±3.0h, P=0.966).The complete abortion rate was95%for oral misoprostol and80%for vaginal misoprostol (P<0.05) for the termination of10-16weeks’gestation.There were minimal difference in effective abortion. Side effects were generally similar for both groups,although significantly more women in group2allocated to gastrointestinal reactions with less bleeding,which commonly attributed to the more administration of misoprostol they began.No difference in adverse effects,blood loss,the amount of misoprostol,the blood biochemistry,the menstruation after abortion,or the satisfaction to the patients.ConclusionBoth oral and vaginal misoprostol treatment following mifepristone administration to teminate8-16weeks’gestations were effective.There were no significant differences.
