Application Of Halo Pelvic Ring Traction In Correcting Severe Scoliosis

Objective:To investigate the value of halo pelvic ring traction in correction of severe scoliosis.Methods:21patients with severe scoliosis were admitted and then underwent posterior halo pelvic ring traction, and soft tissue release and thoracic angioplasty during traction. After traction to the planned correction angle, posterior spinal surgery, bone graft and internal fixation and fusion were performed. Scoliosis Cobb’s angles and height of patients were measured before and after treatment and the differences were compared.Results:Soft tissue release, thoracic angioplasty, and posterior spinal surgery during traction were successfully performed in all of the21patients. The scoliosis Cobb’s angle were corrected from95.9±28.4°before treatment to35.2±12.3°after treatment in average. The correction rate is63.3%. Their height was increased from132.7±15.4cm before treatment to146.7±15.4cm. The differences were statistically significant with a P value less than0.05. The physical appearance, walking posture and cardiopulmonary function of the patients were improved. No complications such as spinal cord injury occurred. All the patients were followed up for an average of1.6years (0.9-2.0years). The segments of the spinal fixation gained bony fusion without failure or fracture of internal fixation, or loss of correction angle (angle loss within5°was considered normal angle loss).Conclusion:Halo pelvic ring traction for treatment of severe scoliosis has important effect, through the guadual adjustment of cranial basin ring traction to reduce sever scoliosis deformity degree, soas to reduce the risk of fixed in surgical correction,to prevent and avoid the spinal cord, nerve, blood vessels, and orther important tissue injury and occurrence. It is a safe and effective treatment.
