There are85Japan Chinese travel handbooks in the Base of InternationalChinese Teaching Materials and Teachers Training. The salient characteristic of thesebooks is that representing situational design of language usages.From1930s to1960s, British applied linguists Harold Palmer and A. S. Hornbyput forward and developed the theory of Situational Language Teaching. Richards, J.C.&Rodgers (2008) considered that languages are used in situations rather than usedas isolated grammars and structures. Based on the Japan Chinese travel handbooks inthe Base, this dissertation defines this type of teaching materials, then summarizes itscharacteristics, and studies the most representative one: the situational design. Theanalysises are carried out from what the communicative situations and activities are,why chose them, the number of them, the order of communicative situations, wordsand language points etc. Finally it turns out that the situational designs of these JapanChinese travel handbooks are practical and aim to solve the actual problems. Further, these five handbooks have plenty of representations of localization, and the maindifferences among them are the differences of quantities and characteristics. Inaddition, limitations of situations and some inaccurate words and sentences in certainhandbook are the main shortage. This dissertation aims to provide some references for the design of handbooks, and get some assessment criteria for evaluating excellent situational design ofteaching materials.
