| Appraisal theory, as a new development of Systemic Functional Linguistics, mainly focuses on the study of evaluative meaning of language. It involves three sub-systems:Attitude, Engagement and Graduation. Attitude system, as the core of the appraisal theory, refers to the values by which speakers/writers evaluate human behavior and associate emotional/affectual responses with participants and processes. There are three types of attitudinal positioning:emotional, ethical and aesthetic, which actually are the three sub-domains of Attitude, that is, Affect, Judgement and Appreciation.In the past two years, some television stations have launched TV dating show, which caused a lot of response in the society. JiangSu TV’s "If you are the one" is the most representative and controversial program which initiated all aspects of thinking and research. My study is aiming to find the similarity and difference between female and male speakers in TV dating show from the the perspective of Attitude System in Appraisal theory, as well as the factors contributing to such distribution. I hope my study can give some advice to the future research in gender language and the application of Appraisal Theory in Chinese. |
