As a result of the waves of Chinese migration to Canada in the80s, the growth ofthe Chinese literature in Canada has achieved rapid development. The essays andnovels written in the Chinese language share equal status in this development. Byusing the essays or prose works of the new Chinese immigrant writers as an example,this thesis aim to analyze the writers’ background of transplant, cultural identity, andartistic content as reflected in this group of writings as a new perspective in the studyof New Chinese immigrant literature in Canada.This thesis will first trace the development of the writing of essays among thenew immigrant writers and analyze factors which gave rise to this genre in theChinese language literature of Canada. Essay writings of the new immigrant writersare a unique part in the creation of Chinese literature of Canada, but the study is notcommensurate with its rich creation. So far, there is no master or doctorate thesisdedicated to its study.Cultural identity is always a problem which every immigrant to foreign soil willencounter. This problem is in a continuing process of redefining and reconstruction.The third and fourth chapters of this thesis respectively take as its object of research,specific works by new immigrant writers from mainland China and those from HongKong and Taiwan. Due to the differences in the background of their migration, theircultural identities evolve in different paths, thus exhibiting different concerns andcreative style in their literary craft.Evidently, with mainland China’s "new immigrants" and Hong Kong andTaiwan "new immigrants" as representatives of the two big groups of Chineselanguage writers, the future of the growth and flourish of the Chinese languageliterature in Canada look indeed promising.
