All kinds of old folk dance of the Xibe in Xinjiang are generally referred toas Beilun. Beilun, the art of life of the Xibe, has substantial content, a uniquestyle, and distinct characters. Beilun, short and concise and closely bound up withthe Xibe’s social life, has a long history and is the remains of their ancientculture.This paper tries to analyze the cultural types of Beilun and its musicalstructure, and reveal its cultural connotation and social function, with the help ofthe source of Beilun and the social and historical culture of the Xibe in Xinjiang,based on the field survey by the means of individual interview and participativeobservation of Beilun and the music performed for Beilun handed down fromtheir ancestors.The paper, providing a reference basis for its musical system, makes asuggestion that taken the protection of its representative successors as the focus,and in the way of man-to-man teaching method, the protection of Beilun shouldbe carried out, according to the present situation that Beilun is under theprotection of the intangible cultural heritage.This paper consists of six parts, with the first part serving as the introduction,which elaborates the source of Beilun and reviews the Xibe historical culture, thehistory and development of Beilun. The scope and method of the research, thesource of the materials, the purpose of the research, and its significance are alsooverviewed.The second part deals with the history and the present situation of Beilun,analyzing its development, its tendency, its inheritance and its present situation,by tracing back to its origin.The third part, explain Beilun types, its morphological characteristics and itsperforming places, according to the findings of the field investigation.The fourth part focuses on the methods and functions of the musicperformed for Beilun, the music of which exaggerates and heightens the role ofemotions with its rhythm, its melody, its musical structure, its scales adjusted andits five main accompaniment instruments.The fifth part analyzes Beilun cultural connotation, from three angles---itssocial scenarios, diversity-culture lives community, and the Xibe custom andtraditional culture----and explains its social functions, from six aspects--- civilization, national identity, appreciation of the beauty, communication,entertainment fitness, and financial condition.The sixth part is the conclusion, summarizing this paper.
