The perceptual span is defined as the range of available that readers can beobtained in reading. Studying the perceptual span of reading is the important topic inReading Psychology. The perceptual span would change because of the difference ofwriting systems. Throughout the past, researches of the perceptual span were onwhom use the Chinese as the first language, rarely researches of the perceptual spanwere on whom use the Chinese as the second language. In this research, designedtwo experiments, the standard model of moving window technique was used to studythe different of windows conditions of perceptual spans as the different levels ofChinese and Uygur College Students in Chinese reading. While taking advantage ofthe particularity of the Chinese vocabulary, select a sentence by the pairs of words, inorder to investigate the reading process is the word for the processing units or wordunits.Experiment one: Eye movement studies on the perceptual span of Chinesereading for32the different levels of Chinese Uyghur College Students under themoving window condition on character. The present experiment was2(levels ofChinese: primary, high-level)×8(8window sizes) mixed design.Experiment two: Eye movement studies on the perceptual span of Chinesereading for24the different levels of Chinese Uyghur College Students under themoving window condition on two-character word. The present experiment was2(levels of Chinese: primary, high-level)×6(6window sizes) mixed design. Results as follows:(1) On character window condition, the perceptual span of Chinese level-lowerUighur Students is one character to the left of the fixated character and twocharacters to the right; the perceptual span of Chinese senior Uighur Students is onecharacter to the left of the fixated character and three characters to the right.(2) On two-character word window condition, the perceptual span of Chineselevel-lower Uighur Students is one two-character word to the left of the fixated wordand one two-characters word to the its right; the perceptual span of Chinese seniorUighur Students is one two-character word to the left of the fixated word characterand two word-characters words to its right.(3) Different levels of Chinese Uyghur subjects index scores as the level ofChinese promotion, presents the optimization tendency. The perceptual span wasasymmetric in Chinese reading and the right size of perceptual span was larger thanthe left one.(4)The different levels of Chinese Uyghur College Students reading isword-based reading, not character based reading.
