Eye Movement Studies On Perceptual Span Of Chinese Reading In College Students

The perceptual span of reading refers to the area of useful information that the reader obtains from around the gaze point during the reading process.The study of perceptual breadth is the most basic research problem in reading research.The study of the breadth of reading perception in the West is mostly concentrated in the phonetic alphabet.The eye tracker used in the application has been used as a more mature research tool.Chinese characters are different from the phonetic alphabet system.Chinese characters and pinyin characters are different in character characteristics,reading habits and writing styles.It is one of the unique writing systems.Moreover,the domestic research on reading eye movements started late,and the research on the basic processing unit of perceptual span of Chinese reading is still unclear.In order to explore the processing unit of perceptual span under different window conditions,the previous research on the basic processing unit is discussed.Some people think that it is a word,while some people think it is a word.However,the classification of Chinese in these studies is vague.Based on this,this study uses the Eye link 1000 plus eye tracker as a research tool,using mobile window technology,by re-examining Chinese word formation,the problem of perceptual span of Chinese reading is further studied through three experiments:Experiment 1: Using a monosyllabic morpheme as a visual window,and setting 7kinds of window conditions,sentences composed of two syllable words(two morphemes)are used as experimental materials,the reading eye movement characteristics and the perceptual span of the college students were discussed;Experiment 2: A sentence composed of two-syllable words(two morphemes)is used as an experimental material to study the perceptual span of five kinds of window conditions with a two-syllable word as a presentation window;Experiment 3: Each sentence in the material consists of two-syllable words,each of which contains 2-3two-syllable morpheme words,with two-syllable words as the window,five kinds of window conditions,and continue to explore Chinese sentence materials.Perceptual span.Each experiment was single-factor experimental design,using a standard moving window paradigm,namely eye movement-presentation following technology.The main results of this study are:(1)In the perceptual processing of the presentation unit as a monosyllabic morpheme,the range of the perceptual span of the college students is from the space of one Chinese character to the left of the gaze point to the space of 2-3 Chinese characters on the right side;When two morphemes are presented as units,the perceptual span is 1-2 Chinese characters on the left side of the fixation point to 3-5Chinese character spaces on the right side;when the two-syllable words(including two-tone morpheme words)are presented as presentation units The perceptual span is1-2 Chinese characters on the left side of the fixation point and 5 Chinese character spaces on the right side.(2)The range of Chinese reading perceptual span is larger than the left side and has asymmetry.(3)The perceptual span of the two-syllable words as the presentation window is larger than the perceptual span of the single-sentence words as the presentation window.In Chinese reading,college students read with two-syllable words instead of single words.The two-syllable morpheme is the basic processing unit for Chinese reading.
