This article is the special research on the novel “Mountain air” which is wrote byAlai who is a Tibetan famous writer. This article includes introduction, text andepilogue.The introduction mainly explains the significance of this article. Firstly, thearticle sums up the study of “Mountain air” in the academia, and shows the actuality ofthe research and analysis about “Mountain air”. Secondly, this part shows the researchmeaning of “Mountain air” from the tribe of literary history, ethnology and philosophyperspective. At last, this part introduces the main contents of this article briefly.There are three chapters of the text of the thesis. The first chapter explains theconnotation of the “Mountain air” that is about three aspects: reflecting on history andthe anxiety for the reality, the lost and the redemption of human nature, the pursuit andthe reconstruction of the culture. To the reflection of time, the novel not only has thecomplaint and meditation of “great leap forward” and “Culture Revolution” whichagainst nature and cause social unrest, but also the criticism of the money worshipamong Tibetans at present. On the lost and the redemption of human nature, the novelnot only reveals the lost of human nature when people face political power, love,business and money, but also expresses the hope of salvation by the religiousconfession. For cultural reconstruction, the novel expresses the anxiety about thedemolishment of the national culture, and shows possibility of the modern conversionof the national culture.The second chapter analyses the characters in “Mountain air”. The point of thischapter is that whether Tibetan or Han characters in the novel all have a rich andunique culture and humanity connotation and personality characteristics, and this novelenriches the gallery of characters of contemporary Tibetan literature, shows Alai’scontributions to Chinese literary world. In this chapter, these characters are divided intofour kinds as the national culture guardians, strays who lose their way in secular lifeand intruders who barge in ancient villages, summarizing their common features andanalyzing the differences among their personalities. The people like Tibetan sorcerer Duoji and rural intellectual Dase are the guardians of national culture, they inherit thetraditional culture, and uphold the intellectuals’ spiritual position. The youngergeneration of Tibetans, such as militia lieutenant Suobo, female singer Semo,demobilized soldier Dage and high school student Lajiazeli, are the secular strays,respectively losing their beliefs in the pursuit of political power, career, love and money,however most of them find themselves back slowly in the life, achieve theirredemption of humanity. Director of the police station Lao Wei, the village Secretaryhunchback Lin and the camel carpenter who are Han people living in Tibet, they arethe intruders, they are the symbol of the collision between mainstream culture and folkculture, and the symbol of the impact between Han culture and Tibetan culture.The third chapter sums up the art characteristics of “Mountain air”, and showssome innovations of this novel in the art. There are three main art characteristics of“Mountain air” as varieties of narrative, distinctive structure and strong nationalcolor. Varieties of narrative includes flexible angles of the narrative, diversificationof the expression and the using of modern symbolism. Distinctive structure includesthe petal structure, the circulation structure and symmetric structure of the novel, thesethree kinds of the structure are the main artistic innovations in the novel. The strongethnic regional color is showed in the description of plateau scenery, Tibetan uniquecustom and Tibetan culture spirit.The epilogue gives an overall evaluation to “Mountain air”.This novel is anexcellent full-length novel that has profound significance, rich connotation and strongnational color, it is an important work after Alai’s “The dust settled”; It is a valuableTibetan narrative, and it is a successful collection of the reflection literature, the newreflection literature and the vanguard literature. No matter in the contemporary Tibetanliterature history or in the Chinese contemporary literature history,“Mountain air” is avery important work, it cannot be ignored in the literature history.
