Vocabulary acquisition is regarded as the most important part in the secondlanguage acquisition. In China, vocational colleges are developing very fast, and somore and more attention has been paid to the teaching and learning of English invocational colleges. This thesis tries to make an experimental study of L2vocabularyacquisition of vocational college students and tries to find an effective and efficientway to expand the students’ vocabulary.This thesis mainly investigates the following aspects:(1) Does sentence writingwith the help of target words have positive effect on L2vocabulary acquisition tovocational college student?(2) Is teaching with the help of Chinese translationhelpful to the Chinese vocational college students (non-English majors), comparedwith English-English teaching method at the comprehensible input stage?(3) Whatare the reactions of the participants toward this sentence writing method?In order to answer these questions, the researcher selected145(71inexperimental group,74in control group) freshmen of non-English majors fromChuzhou Vocational and Technological College to do this study. The subjects ofexperimental group were required to write sentences with target words, and theteacher used both English and Chinese to explain the new words. The control groupwas required to write sentences without target words and the teacher just usedEnglish in class.The main findings of the research are:(1) Sentence writing method is aneffective way to stimulate students to learn new words;(2) In vocabulary teaching,the Chinese-English teaching method is suitable to vocational college students;(3)Writing sentences with target words is welcomed by most of the students.This study confirms the role of sentence writing method in L2vocabularyacquisition, and has important enlightenment on the vocational college Englishlearning and teaching...
