Negative Transfer Of Qingjian Dialect To Efl Learners’ English Pronunciation

In the process of second language acquisition (SLA), the learner’s firstlanguage (L1) plays an important role, especially in the acquisition ofpronunciation. Pronunciation is not only one of the most basiccomponents of language, but also the most basic form of communication.For English learners in Qingjian, it is not Putonghua, but Qingjian dialectthat is their L1and influences learners’ English pronunciation acquisition.Based on the theory of language transfer and contrastive analysis, thisstudy aims to find out the similarities and differences between theQingjian speech sound system and English sound system, and analyzesthe influences of Qingjian dialect on English pronunciation learning. Theresearch questions proposed are: Does Qingjian dialect affect EFLlearners’ English pronunciation?; and if yes,(a) does it cause negativetransfer?;(b) which specific features in Qingjian dialect are responsiblefor the negative transfer?. In the study, combined methods (including questionnaire, tape recording and face-to-face interview) are employed tocollect data.From the survey, it is found that Qingjian dialect does transfernegatively into English pronunciation. In vowels,/e/and/∵/areinfluenced by//, since there is only/LI/in Qingjian dialect and mostdiphthongs are also affected by Qingjian dialect. Long and short vowelsdo not exist in Qingjian dialect, so they are usually replaced by similarsounds. In consonants,//,/λ/,/(?)/and//are absent in Qingjian dialect,so they are also replaced by similar sounds.//and/n/are pronounced asone phoneme//because there is no distinction between front nasals andback nasals in Qingjian dialect. And/p/,/b/,/t/,/d/,/k/,/g/,/l/, and/m/will be added a sound to them.
