According to the nature of reduplication,we classified formation reduplication, syntax reduplication, pragmatic reduplication.Their own existence is not independentof each other. Adopted the Markedness Theory, especially the Relative Markednessand Markedness Reversals, we can not only distinguish reduplicative form is markedrelative to the basic form, and also consider the interior of them is continuous,is related to the other category. This paper is divided into six parts:Chapter1is introduction. We introduced the purpose and significance of thisstudy, the status of reduplication research, methods and theories.Chapter2, we analyzed the reduplication in modern Chinese under Markednesstheory. First of all, we explained the causes of reduplication. Essential reason isarbitrariness and iconicity. Syllabic collocation, Principles of Pragmatics andLanguage analogy mechanism is the motivations of markedness. According to thecriteria of markedness, we believed that reduplicative form is marked. RelativeMarkedness and Markedness Reversals are presented through the whole research.Chapter3, we elaborated the internal difference of the basic form, theconversion of quality level transformation, semantic, subjective meaning, syllable isthe point to basic form to reduplicated available or not.Chapter4, we extended the application of the Markedness theory to theasymmetry between basic form and reduplicative form. Corresponding meaning toreduplication is with quantitative iconicity theory. We discussed the Classificationand interval of quantity, mutually exclusive and complementary with the other formsin the amount. In semantic functions between basic form and reduplicative form areindicated in3respects: decrease, inclination and differentiation. In Syntactic function, reduplicative form reflected their own particularity. Reduplication generally relativewith affirmative form, sometimes the appearance of reduplication is the requirementsof syllabic collocation.Chapter5, we investigated reduplicative forms in Modern Chinese Dictionaryand concluded that adjective formation reduplication affected significantly to syntaxreduplication in modern Chinese. Conclusion is the last part,we summed up the main viewpoints in the wholepaper, linked the different reduplication, believed that Markedness theory possessesstrong explanatory power to reduplicative forms and laws of development.
