| The Kyrgyz epic "Manas" is encyclopedic in scope, spread over several thousand years ofhistory. Many domestic and foreign scholars have gone to the epic’s birthplace andaccumulated a large amount of field data, showing "Manas" to be a richly informativeworld masterpiece. Therefore the epic "Manas" has a very high academic value, and hasalways been valued in academic circles. Based on their appearance in the epic, place namesand ancient Kyrgyz production activities, as well as the nation’s cultural psychology andsocial history, are different from other ethnic groups. Both in the habits of naming and thenames’ connotations, Kyrgyz naming practices clearly have their own uniquecharacteristics.According to China ’s Manas conductor, Jusup Mamay, in concert the epic "Manas"’sChinese version, it is possible to take the first part of the epic as an example, and touncover deeper cultural information, including the meaning of place names in the Kyrgyzlanguage, their classification, and epic names’ general situation and characteristics.The article is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, which mainlyintroduces the epic "Manas" names dealt with in the present research work, and brieflyintroduces the epic "Manas." The second part deals with the place names found in the epic"Manas," and makes a statistical analysis of three variants of the names found in the epic.The third part of the paper deals with the features of the names found in the epic. In thischapter, we will discuss the naming rules and linguistic features displayed in the namesfound in the epic, including their respective reality or fictionality. The fourth part of thework treats the meaning of the names found in the epic. This chapter deals mainly with theways in which the place names found in the epic reflect Kyrgyz mental culture, and digsout the epic names in the presence of more esoteric content.A lot of domestic and foreign study has focused on place names in "Manas," but due tolimitations of time and content, these studies have been limited in nature. Therefore, thepresent study has substantial value in improving our understanding of place names in thisancient Kyrgyz epic. |
