Language is the primary domain of ideology. Studies by critical linguistssince1970s have suggested that race discrimination, gender discrimination andpolitical conflicts widely exist in media language.Critical discourse analysis is a socially-oriented application to linguisticanalysis. It seeks to make clear the relationship between language and society,in particular the relationships between language and ideology.The present thesis mainly conducts a critical analysis of15news reportsfrom Times, in an attempt to find out the hidden ideological meaning betweenthe lines, and then makes a discussion why there are difference in ideologies andin what way they are different. The thesis begins with a literature review on theorigin and development of critical discourse analysis. And then it introduces themain analytical methods used to identify the ideological meaning hidden fromview, including classification, transitivity, modality and transformation. Finally,a specific study in terms of their linguistic features is made on the15newsreports about China, in which the ideological struggle is exposed. |
