According to SFG, it is a subjective process for human to construe variousexperiences. In the practice of speaking, the speaker’s opinion will be inevitablyreflected on the lexical-grammatical level of the discourse. Grammatical metaphor hasbecome one of the most important evaluative resources. The thesis attempts toanalyze the evaluative functions of various grammatical metaphors in the reports ofShanghai Expo by the western mainstream media to expose the hidden ideology andhow the reporters use the special language phenomenon to convey the representedideology to the reader.On the basis of theory of systematic functional grammar, a new framework willbe established to analyze the evaluative function of various grammatical metaphors inthe selected linguistic data. It is found that the values of the message will be encodedinto the message inevitably. While the news agencies serves for its country andrepresented organization. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the ideologies impliedin different news discourse. Besides, the analysis of evaluative function ofgrammatical metaphor in the news report also help to demonstrate how the writersmake use of different grammatical metaphor to affect the readers and how they servefor the organizations they represent through language.The thesis aims to draw out the implicit ideologies and different attitudes throughthe analysis of grammatical metaphor. The researches will provide someenlightenment on the study of evaluative function of grammatical metaphor. Besides,it offers a practical method for the readers to penetrate into the discourse to establish acritical awareness in the process of reading political news report.
