Fuzzy Translation From The Perspective Of Image-G Actualization

Literary translation should not only represent the content of the source text, but also embody its aesthetic effects. Therefore, on the foundation of representing the exact meaning of the source text, how to achieve the same aesthetic effects in the target text as much as possible is the problem that every literary translator needs to solve. Based on the aesthetic factors in literary works, in order to achieve aesthetic equivalence, the present thesis takes image-G actualization theory as the guidance, and applies fuzzy translation into it, trying to provide a new perspective for literary translation.Gestalt psychology emphasizes that the whole is greater than the parts, and the whole is more than the sum of the parts together. Jiang Qiuxia put forward image-G actualization in literary translation on the basis of this principle. Image-G mentioned here is a relative notion, which refers to the holistic and integrated image of the works. In literary works, image-G can be a word, a sentence or a whole text, even the relevant context in comprehension process is also included. The actual meaning that literary works contain can not be obtained simply from the adding of linguistic elements. In the process of writing, the author put a lot of his own emotions into the works, leaving many blanks and indeterminate spots for the readers. So, in the light of image-G actualization theory, literary translation means that when the translator is interpreting and accepting the original text, the first thing he/she intends to do is constructing a cognitive schema—a whole image with gestalt qualities, then recreates this image-G in target language.This thesis endeavors to have a tentative study in the translated version of Lu Xun’s collection of short stories Na Han from the perspective of image-G actualization theory, and apply fuzzy translation strategies into the progression of image-G actualization to realize aesthetic actualization in the translated version. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one gives an introduction of background and significance of the thesis. The research questions and methodology are also included. Chapter two demonstrates the previous studies on image-G actualization theory and fuzzy translation. A general introduction of the previous studies on Na Han and its translated version are also presented in this chapter. Chapter three provides a theoretical basis for present research. It reveals that it is feasible to apply fuzzy translation into the process of image-G actualization in literary translation through the analysis of the relationship between image-G actualization and fuzzy translation. Chapter four is the core of the thesis. A tentative study on Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang’s translated version of Call to Arms will be conducted in this part. The translation process is divided into three stages on the basis of image-G actualization: linguistic cognition and aesthetic experience; image-G and fuzzy translation; information actualization and aesthetic actualization. Based on the analysis of the specific examples, finally there will be a discussion of the effects on translated version through image-G transforming: (1) aesthetic effects of harmony; (2) reproduction of gestalt qualities in target text; (3) reflection of the translator’s subjectivity in target text. The last part is the conclusion of the thesis. The limitation of the present study and implication for further study are also provided in this part. By analyzing the application of fuzzy translation strategies in the process of image-G actualization in the translated version of Na Han, this thesis is supposed to provide some helpful suggestions to literary translation and studies on Na Han.
