A Study On Gu's Translation Of Mao Zedong's Poetry From The Perspective Of Image-G Actualization

Mao Zedong's poetry,quintessence of Chinese literature,enjoys enduring and wide popularity both at home and abroad for its sublime and lofty artistic imagery,profound implied meanings and distinctive writing skills;since its advent,copious translators both at home and overseas are engaged in introducing it into foreign countries,so it has already been translated into multiple languages and then myriad versions,amongst which Gu Zhengkun's English version is a phenomenal representative.Gu's English version is characterized by rhymed translation and multifarious annotations which are distinctively differentiated from the other versions,whereas Gu's English version,compared with the other versions,has barely expropriated the attention it merits in the previous investigations.Image-G actualization theory is inextricably bound up with literary translation,which lays more emphasis on the representation of artistic images beyond linguistic meanings.Jiang Qiuxia,the proposer of the theory,maintains that image-gestalt is a universal property existing in the literary text and the literary work of art can be called as such only if it produces artistic images,which is a gestalt instead of isolated items.Consequently,image-G proves to be the essence of literary text and equally the representation of it is the kernel of any literary translation.As far as representation of image-G is concerned,there embody three stages: reception of original text,mental actualization of image-G,and formation of translated text.Poetry,teeming with numerous images,deserves inquiry from the perspective of image-G actualization as a form of literary text.Since the research on Gu's English version is still in the blank stage,the thesis singles out Gu's English version as the object of studies,intending to playback the whole process of Gu's translation of Mao's poetry,explore the feasibility of image-G actualization theory in guiding poetry translation and enrich the research on translation of Mao's poetry.The thesis is constituted of five chapters in whole.Chapter One presents a brief introduction,including research background,research significance,researchmethodology,and thesis structure.Chapter Two is literature review,combing the development of image-G actualization theory,the studies on Mao's poetry and the studies on Gu's English version.Chapter Three displays theoretical framework of this thesis,specifying the basic notions and the process of image-G actualization.Chapter Four,the main body of the thesis,systematically elaborates on the guiding significance of image-G actualization theory towards Gu's translation of Mao's poetry.Chapter Five draws a conclusion of major findings,limitations and prospects for further study.
