Diplomatic interaction refers to the communicative activity between a country with other countriesconcerning international affairs; language for diplomatic purpose functions as the medium throughwhich diplomatic interaction conducts, the remarkable characteristics of the language being strategicand polite. These characteristics differentiate language for diplomatic purpose from that for otherpurposes. In diplomatic communication, diplomats frequently tend to employ diplomatic euphemism inanswering sensitive questions as well as in creating a relaxing communicative atmosphere. Translationof diplomatic euphemisms is different from that of other discourses, since diplomatic euphemisms arecharacterized by high political sensibility and policy manifestation. Taking the language for diplomaticpurpose at regular press conference as examples, the author attempts to make a systematic analysis onthe diplomatic euphemisms from the perspective of pragmatics, so to offer a basis on which thelanguage for diplomatic purpose is translated accurately and faithfully.This thesis aims to research the pragmatic functions and translation methods of euphemisms indiplomatic language through qualitative analysis. The thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one ismainly introduction, which review the different aspects of euphemisms. The author introduces theobjective of research and the significance of research, and points out the origin of euphemisms. Theconcept“euphemism”in this thesis has the most extensive denotation, concluding the lexical, syntactic,discourse level in diplomatic language. In second chapter, the author reviews the related reviewliterature of euphemism, gives its definition and shows the previous studies abroad and at home.Chapter three is an overview of diplomatic euphemisms. The author gives the related definitions ofdiplomacy, diplomatic language and diplomatic euphemisms, and analysis their features and thenecessity for application of diplomatic language and the communicative effect of euphemisms indiplomatic language. The fourth chapter focuses on the pragmatic functions of diplomatic euphemisms,which establish the theoretical framework through analyzing the euphemisms in diplomatic languageand explain the cooperative principle and politeness principle. The pragmatic functions of euphemismsin diplomatic language is to improve the flexibility and appropriateness of utterance and to createspecial communicative effects in diplomatic affairs. In chapter five, the author studies translationmethods of euphemisms in diplomatic language from dynamic equivalence theory and pragmatic function theory. In the process of translation, the translator should pay much attention to euphemism indiplomatic language, and choose relevant maxim of pragmatic theory and translation methods accordingto the special communicative purpose in the diplomatic affairs. Finally, the author summarizes the majorfinds of study, including some research limitations and suggestions.The diplomatic language is different from the ordinary language, which has its uniquecharacteristics as a tactful and polite language. So it can be concluded that the research of translation ofeuphemisms in diplomatic affairs has its theoretical and practical significance.
