The researches of the kinship terms started from "Er Ya" and "Book of Rites", whichwere integrated and renewed by many books later, such as Yang Xiong’s "Dialects", Liu Xi’s"Explanation of the Names", Kong Fu’s "Xiao Er Ya" and the Zhang Yi’s "Guang Ya". Up tonow, the researchers don’t focus on the simple describing and explaining of the kinship terms,but study the kinship terms from linguistic perspective and discuss and analyze them as basicvocabulary from various aspects. The present thesis studies the kinship terms collected fromnine kinds of materials, including "History of the Five Dynasties", "Xuan He Yi Shi in SongDynasty," "Five Types of Novels with Pictures Published in Yuan Dynasty", "A Story XueRengui" and "Beijing Popular Novel". From a macro-perspective, this paper describes andcompares these terms laterally and longitudinally, and tries to present the system of kinshipterms completely.The present paper consists of six parts. Chapter I is the introduction, mainly introducingthe motivation, purpose and significance of the research on kinship terms, and it alsosummarizes the research situation about kinship terms and the novels in Yuan Dynasty.Chapter II mainly elaborates the related issues about the kinship terms, such as their concepts,classification, and research methods . Chapter III serves as an exhaustive collection, sortingand classification of the kinship terms in Yuan Dynasty. Besides, from both of the static anddynamic angles, the author classifies the kinship terms takeing into account of the followingfactors :whether the term is single or group address,whether it is first,second or third personaladdress ,and whether the formation of the words demonstrates certain emotional coloring .This chapter also traces the source of the kinship terms from the static angle, and analyzes theusing situation of the first person, second person and third person forms of the single terms.ChapterⅣanalyzes the language of the nine kinds of kinship terms in Yuan Dynasty, basedon the materials provided in the previous chapter. More specifically, this chapter studies the kinship terms in detail from pragmatic, grammatical and semantic perspectives. ChapterⅤserves as a comparison between the kinship terms in the novels of Yuan Dynasty and thekinship terms in "Sketchbooks in Tang Dynasty" and "Collections of Dramas in YuanDynasty", in order to present the unique characteristics of the novels in Yuan Dynasty. Finally,ChapterⅥserves as a conclusion of the whole paper.
