Beigun and Tiegun of Xugou were the product of ShanxiProvince lacking of rain, and were the performance of the businessprosperity in Taiyuan. In the late Ming Dynasty to the earlyRepublic of China, the rapid rise of commercial developmentstimulated the prosperity of folk art. Beigun and Tiegun rooted infolk which supply nourishment to them. People research for Beigunand Tiegun of Xugou’s folk performance all-around helps to revealits folk characteristics and survival strategy, which for theprosperity of the folk art and the protection of the intangiblecultural heritage has great significance.Beigun and Tiegun have a long history in China, and have anextensive distribution of dressing square entertainmentperformances. Tiegun is also called Piaose, Tai Pavilio, Zhuozi Xi,Longge and so on. In one system, on a wooden platform, 2-5children or actors, who are put up straight, are fixed on poles inseveral layers. They put on make -up and dress up, and then play ascelestial being, Buddha, Ghosts and gods and perform operas,legends and fairies. With some background decorations, 8-10adults carry the platform and go on the parade performance on thestreet and the square. Beigun is different from Tiegun. 1-3 childrenare fixed on the iron pole, wear make-up, play opera, legends, myths and stories, match again with background decoration, by anadult carry in the streets and squares during the show. Beigun, asknown as Beige, Zhongge and so on, stemmed later than Tiegun,which stemmed from Ming Dynasty, developed in Qing dynasty,and prospered in Qing Dynasty. They spread almost all over thecountry, which are used at the gathering of meeting and requitingthe god, or the performing for festivals. In addition, Beigun andTiegun gathers playing, fine art, decoration and acrobatics as awhole with delicate design, brilliant colors and distinctive actions,and is worthy of watching and can possibly be called the exampleof the square art.The thesis is composed of three parts: introduction, main bodyand conclusion. The introduction comprises the research object,resources of materials, research design and methodology, thepurpose and significance of the research, and the literature review.The main body comprises four chapters: Chapter One is aboutformation of Beigun and Tiegun, and study defined. Chapter Two isabout making and show of Beigun and Tiegun , which is theinnovation of this thesis. Chapter Three is about performingrepertoire, performers and artistic characteristics. The lastchapter is about the flourished reasons, re-revivals as well as thebottleneck encountered in the development, and has put forwardsome reform measures. Base on the study of the main body, theconclusion summaries the findings of the research.The innovation of this thesis is a comprehensive and in-depthintroduction about Beigun and Tiegun, covering more point, and sofar no previous papres detailed introduce Beigun and Tiegun.
