General adverbs play an important role in Spoken English and Written English. They are used to intensify the mood and attitude which could express the speaker’s attitude clearly and realize the interpersonal functions of language, to make two sentences join together coherently and smoothly. The present study investigates the frequencies of general adverbs based on SOLAS corpus and New Horizon College English Corpus (NHCE) and with the help of SPSS,Monon Cone, CLAW4, EXCEL, which attempts to solve the following four questions:(1) What are the distribution of conjunct adverbs, adjunct adverbs and disjunct adverbs in SOLAS convention and new horizon college English?(2) What are the adverbs of high frequency in each corpus and the three categories?(3) What are the differences and similarities of adverbs between the SOLAS and New horizon college English?(4) What are Features of adverbs in formal writing:new horizon college English and SOLAS?The result shows features, similarity, differences of general adverbs in SOLAS and New Horizon College English. Some conclusions are drawn from the tables and the relevant information in three aspects. One is that there is difference existing between the adjuncts and conjuncts. The frequencies of conjuncts and adjuncts are higher in corpus of SOLAS. Second one is that the general adverbs in SOLAS are more complicated than those in New Horizon College English. But the general adverbs in later corpus are more common. Take some particular adverbs from SOLAS for example,"Horizontally, conversely, electro-hydraulically, equidistantly, expeditiously" seem more possible to be used in the more serious writing like international maritime convention. Third one is that there is no word in common between the two corpora’s disjuncts and adjuncts and only two adverbs the same in conjuncts, which implies that conjunct adverbs in general adverbs own less variety, so it is of high possibility to share some adverbs in two corpora. This study will provide the helpful information for the vocabulary teaching especially for the teaching of general adverbs in colleges.
