With the advancement of economy and technology, the world has come into anera of visual culture. Consequently, movie, a form of integrated art, widely pervadesour life. Reports show that currently a major body of movie audience is universitystudents. By analyzing the situation of university students’movie appreciation with thehelp of questionnaires etc, this thesis aims to find out college students’aesthetic valueand value orientation.The analysis shows that two factors contribute to university students’likeness formovies. On the one hand, those students’sensitive, romantic, intense, distinctcharacters constitute their aesthetic value. On the other hand, aesthetic features,recreational and educational function of movies meet the needs of university students’beauty-appreciationThis paper consists of four parts, which are the current situation of universitystudents’movie appreciation; analysis of reasons for their likeness for movies from theperspective of movie types; charms of movies for university students’part; a prospectof the movie appreciation.Chapter One is the current situation of university students’movie appreciation.Based on the comparison between questionnaires distributed in Jilin University andother universities, a conclusion is reached that movies the students appreciate arediversified, including both movies produced home and abroad. But on the whole, theyhave a liking for movies that are new in content, special in the way to express, anddeep in meaning. Five questions are included in the questionnaire, that is quantity ofthe movie they watch, the media they watch the movie, the purpose of watchingmovies, the criteria they choose the movie, and also the types they choose.Chapter Two is the analysis of reasons for university students’likeness for moviesfrom the perspective of movie types. This chapter is developed from five aspects,namely, university students’inner aesthetic needs, also the respective features ofscience fiction movie, comedy, inspiring movie and romantic movie. Science fictionmovies such as Inception, Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean appeal to students in that they satisfy their curiosity about novelty. Recent years, as“thenon-conventional”feature of post-modernism appears in Chinese movies, it conformsto students’individualism, pursuit of freedom and innovation. Therefore, the“ironicimitation”in Chinese movie West Odyssey arouses echo in students. Meanwhile, thatmovie functions well as a recreational and educational tool as it integrated manyelements of daily life. Movies such as Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption andThe Pursuit of Happiness are inspiring in that they encourage students to make full useof the present and stick to their dreams. Romantic movies like First Love, Twilight andLove Is Not Blind can be deemed as the three stages of two students falling in love,from a slight likeness at the beginning to the inveterate love in the middle and finallythe desperate pain of the end of a relationship.Chapter Three discusses the criteria of a movie that satisfies university students’aesthetic value from the aspects of plot, scene, music and characters. Ingeniouslyconceived plots, electrifying scene, beautiful music, and distinctive characters allcontribute to the charm of a movie.Chapter Four is the prospect of the movie appreciation. Based on the analysis inthe previous three chapters, this chapter aims to explore a way to develop the movieindustry that caters for university students’taste.
