In the process of Chinese writing acquisition, assigning the right kinds ofarticles for practice and modeling is an important topic. Looking at all kinds of writingteaching materials, we can see that many editors and writers have a wide array ofdifferent standards and expert opinions. At the same time, it is important tounderstand what is desired by the learners themselves, because their enthusiasm andinvolvement are a large part of the learning process.In an attempt to find the best strategies for writing examples for students, I haveconducted research over the past two semesters in Chinese language classes atRajabhat University in Thailand. The subjects are students who major in Chinese atthe elementary and senior levels. The research items are various types of writingexamples in which different criteria were highlighted: difficulty level, native countryand background of the authors, content of the articles, practical uses for the articles,etc.Upon conclusion of the research I came to the conclusion that the best methodfor choosing teaching materials is to mix together many different kinds of writingexamples. In some instances, materials that are edited or written by teachers are thebest for students at certain phases of their development. At other times, materials thatwritten by students are more effective. Sometimes, the materials can be useful to thestudents, for example, writing resumes or introductions. It was concluded that themost effective learning occurred when the student’s preferences were taken intoaccount.The model articles mainly come from text books. It was found that moststudents like native (Chinese) authors, one third students like authors who have asimilar background with them.It is not important to the students whether or not the author is famous, butstudents must feel as if the articles are actually useful for their improvement in writing. Students tend prefer articles with five to twenty percent new words. They respondwell to articles with useful exercises that help them with grammar and constructingsentences. When the students preferences are taken into account, the model articlesalways motivate the learners to write.During this research phase, I interviewed both teachers and students to determinethe most effective learning techniques. In this way, I was able to make comparisonsbetween the results I achieved and the opinions of certain experts of editors andwriters.I believe that the conclusions I have come to will be useful in the teaching ofwriting acquisition.
