The characteristic of calligraphy development in Tang and Song Dynasties can be summarized as "Tang advocates rules(Shang Fa),Song advocates meaning(Shang Yi)".After the2developing peaks of calligraphy in Tang and Song Dynasties,the calligraphy of Southern Song Dynasty appeared slump. Despite the Calligraphy was in the downturn then,because of the favor from rulers,the art of calligraphy and painting was revered by the government and the public."Suthern Song Four of calligraphy"includes Lu You,Zhang Jizi,Zhu Xi and Fan Chengda,each has his own characteristic in Chinese calligraphy history. Among them, Lu You represents the romantical style of calligraphy on "advocates meaning(Shang Yi)",has his own take on the genre.As a famous poet in history of Chinese literature, Lu You is well known for his poems,thus his calligraphy is blanketed. Yet he was also a good calligrapher,his achievement on calligraphy and calligraphy theory worthy of further research in depth. He wrote a lot of comments on calligraphy that can be found in informal essays such as concise foreword, prefaces and postscripts etc.The theme of his comments on calligraphy is brilliant,and with profound connotation. The calligraphy of Lu You has strength of many great masters,and meanwhile he has a style of his own,his writing style is grand and heroic, the handwriting is well organized and well arranged. Based on Lu You’s social and family background, the dissertation focus on arguments of calligraphy in Lu You’s poems, analyze his understanding and thinking on calligraphy,try to interpret his calligraphy theory, in order to assess Lu You’s thought and practice on calligraphy.The achievement of Lu You’s calligraphy worthy of learning and research by later generations,the poems on arguments of calligraphy reflects his calligraphy theory has certain research value.
