There exist all sorts of conflict in society. In daily communication, sometimes people canagree to disagree and accommodate others’ views with an open mind. While sometimes peopleperhaps maintain their own opinions unrelentingly. In this case, conflict talk is likely to happenwhen they cannot put up with others’ language, behaviors, thoughts, and habits etc. Therefore, conflict talk is inevitable, and meanwhile it is a kind of unharmonious linguistic phenomenonwhich should be avoided, mitigated and eliminated.Conflict talk refers to both a certain kind of speech act denoted narrowly and a process ofinteraction in a broad sense. As a common but complex social and linguistic phenomenon, conflict talk associated with conflict often happen among people of different age groups, andextensive studies have been done in numerous fields. However, for the kind of conflict talkhappened between people in middle adulthood and those in young adulthood, there are rareresearches at home and abroad. When immature young adults in young adulthood that is actually a prolonged one encountersensitive middle-aged people in middle adulthood, the communication between them oftenbreaks down and conflict talk occurs frequently. Based on the speech act theory and impolitenesstheory, the present investigation attempts to collects data from a Chinese TV play “Qing ChunQi” Zhuang Shang Geng Nian Qi (《“'春期”'上更年期》) and analyze conflict talk in thegiven Chinese culture, and the research is primarily represented from the pragmatic prospectivewith the combination of the social psychology of conflict talk parties on the basis of qualitativeand quantitative analyses. To some extent, the present study make contributions to extend thescope of conflict talk explorations and enrich the content of such related researches. In view of the feature of sequential organization of conflict talk, the specific analysis of126conflict interactions is carried out according to initiating, developmental, and terminatingsequences with emphasis on the initiating one.In the initiating sequence and developmental sequence, triggering speech acts andconflicting responses are mainly explored. In general, most conflict talks are triggered by middleadults. In three main actions, accusation takes up the highest proportion, about38.1%. Next isassertion accounting for around34.9%, and the third is request occupying about18.3%.According to the conflicting feedback of impoliteness theory, the aggressive contradictionresponding to the three main impolite speech acts triggering conflict mainly includes negationand negation plus explanation, and each one accounts for about39.1%respectively. This kind offeedback always intensifies conflict. The argumentative contradiction mainly includesexplanation taking up about65.8%and rhetorical questions occupying around74.2%. As there are direct and indirect contradictory argumentative formats, this kind of feedback may intensifyor mitigate conflict. Usually, aggressive contradiction is more frequently used by the middleadults with the top priority of age identity and power position. As the young adults in the youngadulthood easily get emotions, they sometimes choose the relative more aggressive format ofrhetorical question. But as the younger generation, they tend to provide reasons and employmore indirect argumentative feedback to mitigate the antagonism and show their respect for theirparents due to the influence of deep-rooted Chinese traditional culture. Conflict talks endingwithout escalating development occupy only about16.7%.In the terminating sequence, there are six kinds of formats terminating conflict talks:stand-off, the third party intervention, concession, topic change, non-verbal withdrawal andhumorous expression. Among of them, the format of stand-off occupying the highest proportionreaches42.6%. As both age groups usually stick to their own opinions instead of making effortsto reach reconciliation in scientific and efficient way, the conflict talk is often set aside andneither group wins. The reason for this and the unique characteristics of the two groups areclosely related. Next is the format of the third party intervention, which accounts for37%. Asmost of the conflict talks studied in this research occur in family scenes, other family membersusually come to coordinate and the intervention is inevitable. The third one is concessionaccounting for20.4%. Although conflict is inevitable in a family, yet most Chinese people havestrong consciousness of maintaining family stability, members usually actively make concessionto resolve and terminate conflict. As there is always a generation gap between parents and children, conflict is inevitable. Both of them should consider the principle that there is nothing more important than familyrelationship. It is requisite for each group to learn to compromise and mediate family problemswith effective skills. Certainly, the communication needs to be carried out on the basis of mutualrespect and trust.
