C-E Translation Of Chinese Classics Through Coordination

Translation is a cross-linguistic, cross-cultural, cross-social communication. The limitation of thetranslation lies in cultural particularities, if the possibility of it is based on the cultural generalities. As aresult, more attention should be paid to the differences between languages and cultures involved intranslation.There are many different objects of translation study. The Chinese classics translation, which is theembodiment of Chinese philosophy and the quintessence of traditional culture, has influenced Chineseand world economy, philosophy, religion, literature, art and so on during the past two thousand years.This paper chooses Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, which is the classical Chinese culture treasure, therepresentative of traditional classics and the greatest military works in ancient Chinese, as the researchobject. The strategic idea and philosophy in Sun Tzu’s The Art of War has been applied in the military,political, economic and other fields. The aim of this paper is to explore some new angles and newstrategies for C-E translation of Chinese classics.The theoretical framework of this paper is the Coordination Translation Theory proposed byProfessor Gao Jian.“Harmony”emphasized in the Coordination Translation Theory is in the same lineas the“neutralization”of Chinese traditional culture. Various complex relationship in the translatingprocess ought to take“harmony”as the standard to coordinate and the idea of“coordinate is the meansand the harmony is the goal”penetrates the whole translating process in C-E translation of Chineseclassics. The harmony and unity of“true, good and beautiful”is the standard of the CoordinationTheory.Chapter one is the introduction. This part introduces the research background, research purposeand research significance.Chapter two is literature review. This part is divided into two sections. The first section is todiscuss the translation of Chinese classics. And the second section is to discuss the CoordinationTranslation Theory.In chapter three, the author analyses the relationship among translation, culture and language.In chapter four, the author chooses Sun Tzu’s The Art of War as research object, demonstrate thetranslation of the ancient Chinese classics under the guidance of the Coordination Theory with plenty ofexamples. Chapter five is the conclusion of the paper. It summarized the whole research and gives anapproval to the contribution of classic translation.To sum up, the world civilization brings great rich cultural classics in the long precess, whosetranslating and transmission is the important way for the civilization of human being. As one of the fourancient civilizations, China has left descendants numerous cultural classics which has been written intothe history books. Therefore, it is the C-E translation of Chinese classics under the guidance of theCoordination Theory which is an important way to realize the exchange of C-E culture and to fuse theglobal culture.
