Translating Chinese historical and cultural classics is an important approach to the transmission of Chinese history and culture. At the same time, ancient classics, a text type with specific features, require complicated translation methods. It is even harder to translate the Chinese historical classics, as they often contain a large number of cultural elements related to the cultural, historical, military affairs and other aspects in ancient China. Translating Chinese historical classics is still in its early stage of development. Although some scholars began to pay attention to or have already been engaged in the task of translating Chinese historical classics, systematic theories and scientific approaches are still inadequate.Skopos theory is a relatively new model on translation theory, and also the most essential theory in the Functionalist approach. Skopos theory releases the translation from the tie of source text, and interprets the translation act from a new perspective with more attention paid to the active role of the translator. By introducing and explaining translation principles, culture specificity, text type classification, accurate translation and other basic concepts in Skopos theory, and analyzing some typical examples in Professor Hu Zhihui's English version of Zuo's Commentary On Spring And Autumn Annals, this dissertation tries to convince that Skopos theory is instructional theoretically to the translation of Chinese historical classics, and involves more objective and scientific factors in translating rather other much subjective judgments.
