The character figure art picture dates back early in SongDynasty,but as a pity now,the workpiece has been disappearing.Since Shi Naian’s Water Margin comes out, there appearscountless numbers of experts who draw character figurepictures,espacially Du Jin and Chen Hongshou in Ming Dynasty.Under the description of the two painters, the character figuresappear on the paper vividly and exquisite and have a long lastinginfluence. This article is discussed mainly in eight parts. The firstpart simply introduces the development of Water Margin figurepainting; the second and the third part discuss Du Jin and ChenHongsho’s life experiences, history background of creating WaterMargin figure painting and the characteristic of all the figuresrespectively in Ming Dynasty. The fourth part concludes somesimilarities and differences from picture composition, form feature,the use of lines,picture atmosphere and the comparation betweenthe heroine images of the two painters; the fifth part simplyintroduces some art forms of Water Margin figure painting afterMing Dynasty; the sixth part introduces some common illustration Water Margin sample in Ming Dynasty;the seventh part makes abetter understanding of the inner meaning and style of the twopainters’through studying their other importantant works. Theeighth part explains the influence of the two towards their periodand the enlightenment to Chinese painting. Through careful studyand comparation, the latter is affected by the former in someaspects in Water Margin figure painting creation. The two types ofWater Margin figure painting reproduce the figure appearance andstory vividly by simple and realistic lines and get high price of artappreciation and collection.This article chooses the two important painters of middle MingDynasty and late Ming Dynasty as the study models, elaboratingsome of the author’s ideas and views through some analyses oftheir change of feat and style, arrangement of the work and somerelated comparations. Because of the limitation of the author’sability and condition, the lack of Du Jin’s material and the difficultyof material searching, there is unavoidably some omission andshortage and anyone whose advice will be appreciated.
