Jianghu-walking is one part of the walking-culture. Jianghu-walkingdescription can be found in the Water Margin, mainly concentrated on thepre-Chapter eighty-two. After that Song Jiang militaries surrendered tothe Song Dynasty, the description transferred to the military operation,i.e. defeated Liao Dynasty, wiped up Fang La militaries. Thejianghu-walking include walking and rest. The characters showed theirpersonalities in the walking, practiced the value of life, walking betweenthe fates, and finally returned to Liangshan lake. The scenery descriptionhad become the focus of the story in the journey, which produced fourencounters. From the perspective of semiotics,"jianghu-walking" is astable "structure", a small symbol system, and has its own meaning. Thissystem implies peoples’ passion and yearning for freedom. The originalpower of this system is the spirit of pursuit freedom. The jianghu-walkingin the Water Margin implies four kinds of spirit: the spirit of freedom,sense of mystery, the conscious of adventure, the spirit of chivalrous.The jianghu-walking system has an important influence on the laterchivalric novels in Tsing and Ming Dynasty. The chivalric novels learned,imitated the jianghu-walking description in the Water Margin.The present thesis is divided into three main parts, including theintroduction part, the main body and the conclusion part.In the introduction part, this thesis explains the research purposeand the significance of the study according to the jianghu-walkingprescription. Also, the thesis looks back on the history and currentsituation of Shui Hu Chuan research on jianghu-walking and brieflyintroduces the research methodology and content of the thesis.The main body contains four parts. Chapter one introduces the ShuiHu(i.e. the Water Margin) jianghu-walking which is divided into "walking" and "rest", and have a detailed investigation from the perspective offolklore and sociology.Chapter two placed emphasis on the figures of the Shui Hujianghu-walking and scenes description which are summarized andclassified, and at the same time point out the position and significanceof the description in the works.Chapter three analyses the peoples’ encounter in the process of ShuiHu jianghu-walking, generally be divided into four types: struggling withtigers, meeting with thieves, sworn, be caught in gangster inns. Theauthor investigates the source and flow of pre-Ming Dynasty novels whichinfluenced on these figures in the Water Margin.Chapter four analyses the writing of the characters, scenes,encounter and the connotation in ShuiHu jianghu-walking description,influenced many chivalrous novels which includes Outlaws of the Marshafter the transfer, After the water margin, SanXiaWuYi, LvMuDan, HeroBiography of Sons and Daughters and so on. The later chivalric novels inQing Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, which more or less learned,imitated, andinnovated from the Water Margin, especially from the semiotic system ofShui Hu jianghu-walking.
