Chinese Women Translators’ Rewriting From The Perspective Of Feminism

After the’Cultural Turn’, translation studies develops far beyond the linguistic level, and have been situated under historical. political and cultural context. As an important part of cultural study, gender study gained its ground, a movement of rereading and revising translation theories and canonical works has been propelled by the third wave of western feminism and the development of translation studies. Some feminist critics and researchers, exemplified by Sherry Simon, Luise von Flotow, Lori Chamberlain, Barbara Goard and Sussane de Lotbiniere-Harwood, combine translation studies with feminism and reveal male-orientation, gender discrimination embedded in the origin works and translations. At the same time, they question the three basic principles of translation, namely, fidelity, equivalence and the invisibility of translators and challenge the traditional dichotomies of source/target, primary/secondary, writing/rewriting.In the early 1980s, feminism was firstly introduced by Zhu Hong from the western to China, and it has greatly influenced female literature and literature criticism. This thesis will give a systematic summary of the past and current academic findings in the field of feminist translation studies, and take Chinese women translator Zhu Hong’s Chinese-English translations collection A Frolic in the Snow as the material for case study, analyzing this works from the choice of source text to specific translation strategies she took, as to summarize the characteristics of Chinese women translators’translation under feminism. And make a comparison between them and the western counterparts. Under the influence of feminism, Chinese women translators indeed displayed gender awareness in the process of translation, and the trace are exposed thoroughly in the examples exerted from the case study material——A Frolic in the Snow, however, at the same time, with some traditional Chinese views bear in mind, and the totally different social circumstance, their translations are full of Chinese characteristics:the superior status of the principle "fidelity"; moderate translation purpose; and mild expression ways.
