A Study On Feminist Awareness In Zhang Ailing's Translations

Zhang Ailing is one of the most famous female writers in Chinese literature history. However, few people know today that she was also a translator. The Old Man and the Sea and many of her own works(din Suoji and Yuannv). Though abundant researches have been done on Zhang Ailing's writings from different perspectives, little has been done on her translations. To a certain extent, Zhang Ailing deserves to be called a very unique translator. This thesis is devoted to analyze Zhang's self-translation works based on Canadian translation researcher Flotow's strategies. Among them are prefacing, footnoting, supplementing, "hijacking" and rhetorical devices..The author analyzed the related theories and did the comparative studies to achieve the goal. The paper comprises six parts. The author begins the first part with the background, significance and characteristics of feminist translation theories; the second part provides the previous studies on feminist translation theory, self-translation and translations of Zhang's works; then it is followed by the third part about the relevant theories applied in the paper. Take the feminist translation theory as the theoretical foundation of this study. It contains the formation of the feminist translation theory and its main viewpoints:the fourth part tells the details of Zhang's life, her specific living environment and education background which cause the emerging of her feminist awareness. It is also reflected in her self-translation works. and the fifth part shows us the comparative studies; some special translation strategies like prefacing and footnoting, supplementing,"hijacking" and some rhetorical devices. In Zhang's self-translation works, we could find the realization of these strategies in her self-translation works; at last, it comes to the last part about the conclusion of the whole. It shows the feminist translation ideas in her self-translation works.In the paper, through the writer's study, some typical feminist features can be vividly found in her translations. For instance, a feminist translator inclines to use some special translation strategies like prefacing and footnoting, supplementing,"hijacking" and some rhetorical devices. This thesis proposes that her self-translation works shine with some feminist translation ideas.
