China is an Oriental country. Western Sinology evolved through three stages, travelers’ account, Missionaries’report and professional China Study. Missionaries’report laid the foundation for Western sinology. After the Great Geographical Discovery in the16th Century, sea transport was more convenient, more western missionaries set foot on China. The Jesuits’mission was most successful. They pursued a policy of adapting to Chinese reality. The Jesuit missionaries worked hard to learning Chinese, get familiar with Chinese culture, and to strive to find a bridge between Chinese culture and Christianity. In line with the "accommodation policy" Jesuits had written many books, about China’s political and economic system, culture, customs, geography and history. Their purpose was to introduce Chinese culture to Europe, and created an public opinion which support the Jesuit’s mission in China. On the other hand, they also tried to find point from which it could be easier for the Chinese to accept Christianity. The Jesuits’introduction of Chinese culture, serves their Christian mission and was thus constrained. Nevertheless the Jesuits’report did help the Europeans to comprehend China and on which an academic study of China would arose. The missionaries’report had helped to creat a " Chinese fever" in Europe and shaped modern European’s " view of China". It also inspired the enlightenment thinkers. Furthermore, these first hand report has become source materials for the study of Ming and Qing history.
