French Annales School is a famous school in western historiography in the twentieth century. The history of cultural-metalities" is an important research field of the Annales School. Aimed to innovate historical study, the Annales school developed "the history of cultural-metalities" in the1920s and achieved fruitful results. The two founders, Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch, had different approaches which marked two routes in cultural history studies and later developed into research fields called "history of metalities" and "the historial anthropology"The first chapter of the thesis discussed historiographical crisis of the19th century, especially the historiography crisis in France and French idea of historiegraphic innovation. Chapter two analyzed the practice of "the total history" of the Annales school. The dissertation then analyzed the ideas and achievements of "the history of cultural-metalities " as a research field of "the total history".The third and the fourth chapters review the academic career of the two representatives of "the history of cultural-metalities" of the early Annales:Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch. The last chapter discusses the two scholar’s different research orientations and their influences on the Annales School later.The research of "the history of cultural-mentalities" of the early Annales School is an important part of its historical innovation. As "the social-economic history" research, it is one of the important research fields through which the Annales school wants to achieve its goal of "the total history". Its development has laid a foundation for the flourish of "the history of cultural-mentalities" research in the1960s. Its main ideas also become one of the important theoretical sources of the new cultural history.
