A Study Of Translation Of Angel’s Utterances In Tess Of The D’Urbervilles

This thesis seeks to judge different translated versions of Tess by Zhang Guruo, Wang Zhongxiang and Wu Di, with Interpersonal Meaning as theoretical framework. Due to space limitations, we will take Angel’s utterances to Tess as study samples. Three versions will be studied to see whether they comply with the interpersonal meaning of Angel in the original work.We adopt Interpersonal Meaning as theoretical framework and base, for it has its unique advantages. Low-, medium-and high-degree interpersonal meanings provide criteria of evaluating "equivalence" in translation. Besides, based on Interpersonal Meaning, we can subdivide the process of translation into two stages:First, analysis of characteristics of Angel by studying data concerning Interpersonal Meaning; and second, translation of Angel’s utterances by maintaining the maximum of original interpersonal meaning.Another point that this thesis has made is in our resources. We have picked data of Angel’s behaviors before and after he knows Tess’ loss of virginity. Through comparing data in mood types, modal operators, and modal adjuncts before that turning point (Chapters33-34) and after (Chapters35-36), we have found strong contrasts of data in mood types, modal operators, and modal adjuncts respectively. Choice is meaning. The contrast of data provides clues to understand what kind of man Angel is. After the analysis made in the first stage, we take Zhang’s, Wang’s and Wu’s versions and compare the data to judge whether the translated versions maintain the original interpersonal meaning.
