Catchwords refer to those widely and quickly spread words and expressions in acertain period, area or group, which, from a certain point of view, express people’svalues, ideas and states of mind and reflect social phenomena. china carried out aseries reform of political, economic and culture system since the founding of newChina, at the same time, the political, economic, cultural and other fields hasundergone tremendous changes. Therefore, there are a large number of catchwords.The analysis of catchwords’ socio-cultural characteristics is analyzed from theperspective of sociolinguistics. Language is a true reflection of social life, and sociallife will produce subtle effects of language. Therefore, the development and changesof the society is the main driving force of popular words. The evolution of language isclosely linked to the political system of society and economic development levels.Vocabulary is the most sensitive language elements to changes in society while in allsocial factors the most influential factors are political, economic, cultural changes andthe diversification of people’s daily lives.This paper divided the time from the new China was founded until now intothree stages, namely, the early days of new china(1949—1965), the culturalrevolution period(1966—1976), the reform and opening era(1978—2011). Theauthor takes the catchwords of these three stages as the corpus, generalizingcatchwords from the perspective of politic, economics, and culture. Through thecatchwords’ statistics and comparison of the three stages, identifying the catchwordsrelationship among these three stages, finding out how society, politics and economyinfluence on the use of language and how language reflects on them. Then try toreveal the trend of Chinese development. After the founding of new China, the socialsituation of these three stages is different that the catchwords are also different. Thispaper will be based on the synchronic and diachronic dimension,comprehensive use of analysis method, inductive method, comparative method, investigation method fornearly sixty years of catchword research.The catchwords which have nearly sixty years’ history demonstrate both internalunity and dynamic evolution of the trend. The catchwords of these three stages in thisperiod are common in content, form, species, etc. But the first two phases areinfluenced most by political factors; the catchwords are mainly political slogan. Thecatchwords of the third stage are influenced by the development of science andtechnology including the profound impact of the network, which colloquial degree isdeepening and expression degree is richer. All these reflect the catchwords’development trend.
