As the main energy supply of human's daily life,oil plays an important role in the social development and economic growth.Although there raised a high voice on replacing oil by other clean energy these years,the demand for oil and gas will keep growing till 2050.Oil economy will continue to be the backbone of the world economy.It is helpful to build a balanced economic system worldwide by learning more about oil economics.Therefore,the book is worth to be chosen as a translation material both practically and theoretically.The thesis consists of two parts,the Chinese translation of the book and the translation report.The first three chapters of the book,The Economics of Oil-A Primer Including Geology,Energy,Economics,Politics by Sam Carmalt are selected to be the translation project.It examines how oil economics exerts an influence on this fast-changing world.From a novel perspective,the author interpreted the impact by combining geology,energy,economics and politics.And the total words of these three chapters are 16618.The first chapter covers the oil companies finance,how oil companies to make decisions on several prospects and how they run project to make it profitable.The second chapter concludes the analysis of risks of finding oil.The third chapter is about the basics of petroleum chemistry and geology.A lot of terminologies,graphics and professional knowledge about exploration,drilling,oil chemistry and economics are contained in the source language.Guided by three rules of Skopos Theory,skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule,translation methods such as division,negation,inversion,conversion,omission and amplification were applied to translate the source language.By conducting this translation practice,the translator can apply the acquired knowledge to improve translation ability.On the other hand,the translation version is meant to be provided as a reference for researchers,teachers and students who perform research on oil economics to deepen their understanding.The translation report consists of five parts.The first part is introduction,which introduces the background and significance of the translation project as well as the structure of the report.The second part introduces the book and its author and textual feature of the source text.And translation process is described in the third part.The fourth part is the main body of this report which conducts the case study on the sentence under the guidance of Skopos Theory.The last part is conclusion,covering the enlightenment and lessons the translator obtained from the translation practice and the problems that remain to be solved.
