The translation task provided by Foreign Language and Research Press is designed forfive students to translate The American written by Henry James. The writer’s tasks are fromchapter16to chapter20, which are about27,000words. The writer chooses chapter16andchapter17as the translation materials of the thesis.The American is one of the long novel of Henry James in the early phase of his writinglife. By searching the Internet and going to the library, the writer didn’t find any translationversions about it, so it’s important to translate this novel. What’s more, this novel has veryhigh literary value. By translating this novel, this novel can also be read by many Chinesepeople.The whole thesis consists of five parts. Part one presents an introduction to thetranslation materials and the author. Part two is the process of the translation. Part three is themost important part. In this part, the writer shares some translation experiences by studyingsome typical words and sentences. Part four then explains the qualities of a qualifiedtranslator. Part five is the conclusion.By doing this translation work, the writer learns that translation is a hard work. In orderto do the translation well, the translator needs to possess many kinds of qualities, such as theabundant knowledge, the rigorous manner and the spirit of working in groups.
