Power refers to the clear distance existed between the two communicative participants who are in different social status with one more powerful than another. This is not a mutual and equal relation because two people can not have power over one another at the same time in a certain area. Solidarity is mutual which reflected equal relation and concerns the shared experience and social characteristics of both people. In the real society, powerful dialogue is made when the differences showed in a certain context or appeared in the communication. This thesis selected the English major class which can embody powerful dialogue as the research object. At the beginning of this century, teaching by dialogue has become the centre of researching by educators with the developing of educational course reform. Different from the traditional teaching, teaching by dialogue does not take the teacher as the only power in teaching process but a cooperator who can share various resources in teaching with the students.Based on turn-taking theory and critical discourse analysis theory, this thesis analysed the power and solidarity combined with the characteristics of English majors in university English major class, advocating solidarity but avoiding power. Teachers and students should enjoy the same speech rights, building a dialogic spirit—democratic, understanding, cooperative and coexistence. At last, this thesis puts forward several solving strategies, hoping to give some suggestions to the teaching by dialogue for English majors in order to improve class efficiency, develop the students’ comprehensive ability and communicative ability, enhance the achievement of the goal of English teaching reform.
