Amy Tan is a popular Chinese American writer, whose works are mostly bestsellers, which have been translated into many other languages. Her novel Saving Fishfrom Drowning was on the best-seller list of New York Times as soon as published in2005. The Chinese version was published in China in the form of trans-writing, acombination of translation and rewriting, including addition, reduction, adaptationand the change of style, and many English and French expressions which wereremained without translation. Due to its difference from the traditional translation,trans-writing sparked a heated debate in the translation field and also aroused mycontemplation. The author finds that the issues reflected by trans-writing are essentially ethicalthrough an analysis. When Antoine Berman initially proposed the concept oftranslation ethics in1984, a group of western scholars began to put forward their ownviews on translation ethics, which can be seen in academic journals and works. InChina, as the western theories on translation ethics being introduced, there are manyscholars who have their own contributions. However, there are various focal pointsof each school in this field, and even there are paradoxes in one theory. The authorbelieves that the core question of translation ethics is involved in how to deal withthe interpersonal relationship, that is, translation ethics of inter-subjectivity.In the context of economic globalization today, exchange between culturesshould stress on the equal dialogue. As a means for inter-cultural exchange, translation should also be an activity in the principle of equal dialogue, which hasdifferent subjects: the author, the translator, the publisher and the reader. The natureof ethics is an association with the Other; therefore, translation ethics ofinter-subjectivity can guide us on how to deal with the relationship between the Selfand the Other. The author attempts to find the answer from the translation ethics ofinter-subjectivity, construct the translation ethics of respecting the Other, the difference and the truth from the perspective of the Other. Taking the trans-writing ofSaving Fish from Drowning as a case study, through a review on translation ethicstheories as well as the theory of the Other by Levinas and Steiner’s four movementmodel, the thesis, based on the integration of theory and practice, aims to explore theethical issues reflected from the literary translation under the economicglobalization.
