This article aims to cast a diachronical view of the image of Chung Kuel. From thehistorical view, the different style and connotation of all the works about Chung Kuelhave been discussed in this article, combining with such elements as Goki, the Bat, etc.The author systemically and comprehensively explains the image of Chung Kuelwith the help of some literary works and some traditional Chinese paintings by seekingauthors’ emotions contained in those works. By using those illustrations we may have aclear sight of the development line of the image of Chung Kuel: from the time it began toexist to the period of Qing dynasty, Chung Kuel’s outlook was seldom of any differencesas he always wore a black official hat, in a long gown (often with three colors as black,red, and white) and a pair of black boots. The only thing that has changed during thistime was the decoration of the whole painting, for instance, the mount Chung used andthe treasures in his hands.In the modern time, those works about Chung contain some modern elements. Forexample, many works put their focus on some social problems and also give their ownpoint of view on those problems. Nowadays cartoon is a brand new way to illustrateChung Kuel for its expressiveness in depicting Chung’s image. Chung’s image ischanged under the painting pen of the young generation of cartoonists. According to theirdepicting, Chung is no more someone with a big belly and awful outlook, and the storyof him is also changed. Chung Kuel in nowadays are much more various and containmore meanings.
