D.H.Lawrence was born from an ordinary miner’s family. Because his mother was from the middle class, D.H.Lawrence had received good education since he was very young. He began writing when he was twenty years old, which quickly revealed his talent. D.H.Lawrence was aloof, proud and introversive which made his writing possessed a mood of gloomy. In fact, D.H.Lawrence was a literary warriors who was concerned about his country and his people, and who hated the social darkness. His personality of being introversive, proud, and aloof was caused by social reality. In1915, Mr. Lawrence published his novel The Rainbow which made him come into his second climax of literary creation. However this novel which was sharply critical enraged the ruling class, so it was banned by the British authorities. But the thought essence reflected from The Rainbow, was highly praised by the critics and the readers, and a great number of scholars began to comment on this great work.Literature concerns for the reality. For a century the human beings have faced the survival of an unprecedented crisis because of the environmental problems. Many people of insight started to think of the reality, and called on people to possess a sense of urgency through writing, and warned the human beings who are arrogant and conceited to take care of their actions by presenting shocking data. With the rise of the ecocriticism which arose in the ninties of twentieth century, the academic community began to interpret the classic works from a new perspective. Although people had different understandings on this theory, most agreed with the idea that ecocriticism was a research on the relationship between literature and nature. Because of the well-known ecological crisis, the central task of this theory is to explore a series of the social problems and the origion of ideological culture. Professor Lu Shuyuan has put forward that the theory of ecocriticism should contain natural ecology, social ecology and spiritual ecology, and this provides a theoretical basis for reevaluating the social civilization and value orientation. Therefore, in the direction of ecocriticism, this paper tries to interpret The Rainbow from the three angles, and the purpose of this interpretation is to explore the author’s psychological course of evolution, and why his ecological thinking comes into being when people are in trouble in the case of confronting nature, society and spirit. Moreover this paper tries to trace back the author’s source of creation of The Rainbow, and during the same time draw people’s attention to the social cultural roots of all kinds of crises. In the novel of The Rainbow, Ursula is the representative of Lawrence. His cynicism and being not acceptable was shown through Ursula completely. The literary work is the presentation of the author’s idea, while the author’s thought is based on his keen insight of social reality. The particular life experience of his bumpy life and displacement became the source of creation. Since literature concerns for the reality and improves people’s spirit, Ursula or Lawrence himself can not make any difference when facing the miserable social reality, but this can not stop people’s effort for living poetically in nature. However lawrence’s particular life experience, especially the dispersion of most of his life time makes his life colorful, and helps him to win the prominent position in the literary history. Besides, his positive and optimistic attitude was the spiritual strength which realizes his poetic life. All these become the basis of tasting the work, studying the author and contemplating the reality for the readers. Therefore combining above factors with Lawrence and his work, this paper tries to explore the meaningful enlightenment of literature to the social reality during interpretation. Particularly in this multicultural situation of the world, the work which contains ample ecological consciousness, brings us not only appreciation of literature itself, but also the deep baptism of people’s ideological concept, and finally lead to the ecological thought around the world.
