Lorraine Hansberry(1930—1965)was the first African-American female playwright to stage a play on Broadway and won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award in 1959 with her work A Raisin in the Sun.Hansberry’s descriptions and reflections on the environmental crisis, social conflicts and people’s spiritual imbalance in the context of industrialization and urbanization demonstrate her unique ecological consciousness, making A Raisin in the Sun a play of great research significance and value as interpreted from an ecological point of view. From the perspective of ecocriticism, the thesis uses Aldo Leopold’s land ethics, combined with the concept of ecofeminism and the theory of ecological trichotomy proposed by Lu Shuyuan,to explore the causes and adverse effects of the ecological crisis by analyzing the imbalanced relationship between man and nature, man and man,and man and self embodied in the play, and to reveal Hansberry’s concerns and criticism of ecological problems,as well as her demand for the construction of a balanced natural, social and spiritual ecology.Analyzing the work through the theory of ecocriticism, not only provides a new perspective for the study of the play, but also helps readers to examine and reflect on nature, society and the individual spiritual world, and further calls for people’s ecological awareness, thus promoting the harmonious development of natural, social and spiritual ecology.
