In Tang Dynasty, the development of Taoism had already been very mature. As the national religion, Taoism made great contribution to the consolidation of the dominators’ authority..And Taoism also had got great progress at the same time. The Taoist stories in Daozang were produced in the unprecedented background of advocating Taoism at that time. Especially in the late Tang and Five Dynasties period, a large number of Taoist stories emerged. These plentiful Taoist novels are not only the result of the development of Taoism, but also of the influence from the mystery novels of Six Dynasties and the mainstream legends of the Tang Dynasty work. These Taoist novels’themes and artistic features will be excavated in this paper. And the similarities and differences between the Taoist stories and the mainstream legends of Tang Dynasty will also be discussed. In the subject, I am referring to the relevant research on the basis of innovation. In order to comprehensively summarize the Taoist novels, I try to divide their themes into six categories:1.supernatural beings save the world;2, supernatural beings and human beings fall in love.3, Taoism is highly efficacious.4human beings turn to be supernatural beings by practicing Taoism.5the stories about ethics and morality6, describing special people or special events;7monsters of all kinds.or these novels’artistic characteristics, I find that the simple, similar but not the same plots are their main characteristics. The other important feature is that there are a large number of immortal biographies, poetries and rich images.Of course, these fictional characters in the stories are relatively simplistic, but some of them are vivid... These features reflect the purpose of the creators who intended to make Taoism widespread. Taoist novels have false or exaggerated features, so they not only opened up the literature in the temporal area, but also left abundant resources. These novels in Daozang are no exception. The artistic conceptions are also various. The fairies and wonderland represent the beauty, eternity and freedom; Taoist priests and the places they live symbolize the bitterness and truth;ghostly spirits and the hell symbolize the ugly soul and boundary;and ordinary people and human habitats symbolize commonness and transitoriness. All in all, the Taoist novel plays an important part in the history of Chinese literature because of its unique features.
