At the beginning of the21th Century, Ibsen was introduced to China where hisliterature was popular because of publicized luridly by intellectuals in the May FourthMovement. That we has been misconstruing Ibsen, since then, made its inner thoughtsand stage form inconsistently. There are problems of misreading such as mistakentranslation, the angle of criticism. Above all of the wrong way to understand Ibsen liesin intellectuals’ utilitarian appeal, which led to Ibsen’s plays were misconstrued at thattime.The first chapter: the study of Ibsen’s drama language translation. Differenttranslation principles reflect the difference of evaluation criteria and cultural concepts aswell as diverse cognition of foreign things. A variety of distinction embodies intranslation whose language mirrors what the interest the translators have in Ibsen, whichgives expression to the extent of misunderstanding Ibsen’s drama. So that the translationof language is an important point cut to solve the problem of misunderstanding.The second chapter: exploring the angel of criticism on Ibsen. In the May FourthMovement, criticism based on utilitarian by intellectuals who interpreted as aninstrumental way resulted in exaggeration of Ibsen’s thought connotation. For a time,thought became the only standard of evaluation criterion for works of art. This affectedChinese drama down into the dumps after the May Fourth Movement. To cast off thiskind of predicament, in the1930s, intellectuals began to look at Ibsen again, and beganto dig connotations of Ibsen’s drama deeply.Nora is an typical character in Ibsen’s play, who derives many social problemsresulted in misunderstanding of the drama of Ibsen. Thus to probe Nora once again is acritical entry point to solve misunderstanding.The third chapter: the analysis of impact of misunderstanding on Chinese drama.There an inseparable relation between congenital inadequacy of Chinese drama andmisreading. Some phenomena of Chinese drama, such as names what plays had,realistic tendency, and the its rise and fall are subject to misreading of Ibsen’s dramavarying degree.
