| In recent years,with more and more cultural exchanges among countries,many popular foreign dramas have been introduced into China.To help the audience understand the meanings and appreciate the charm of foreign dramas,the translation of dramatic scripts is particularly important.This thesis aims to make a summary of the previous translation principles of scholars or translators from China and foreign countries so as to and find some practical strategies for translating English drama,with Caryl Churchill's Top Girls as the case.When a play is performed on stage,without the direct feeling of the audience,the linguistic features of the drama cannot be fully displayed.In drama translation,the translator must pay attention to both the literariness of the drama and the characteristics of the theatrical performance.In view of these issues,the translator tries to find some principles based on the former studies in drama translation.Since it is about English-Chinese translation,it is better to compare with many points of views presented by Chinese dramatists and translators.Among these ideas,the translation principles of Ying Ruocheng seem the most appropriate to guide drama translation from English to Chinese.To write this thesis,the author consulted relevant materials and had an overall view of drama translation studies home and abroad.Then she analyzed Ying Ruocheng's words on translating drama in the preface of his collection of drama translations.Ying's strategies can be concluded as achieving performability,pursue colloquialism and intelligibility of dramatic language,and to reflect the personalities of different characters.The author also read the English-Chinese version of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial and The Death of a Salesman to have a concrete understanding of Ying Ruocheng's principles from the lines.The author then revises the translation of Top Girls based on Ying's principles and with the help of these parallel texts. |
