Chinese piano music experienced such historical periods as before the foundingof the PRC, the initial state of the founding of the PRC, the Cultural Revolution and thecontemporary era. It grows out from nothing, budding to flourishing. In this process,constantly melting and assimilating Western polyphonic techniques and moderncomposing techniques, Chinese composers created and developed the piano polyphonywith national characteristic.These Chinese style piano polyphonic works can be divided into three kinds: thefirst kind is to adapt and create works based on the Chinese traditional folk songs. Thesecond is to transplant works from Chinese traditional music. The third, a moreadvanced form, is that composers refine ethnic style tone with years of accumulatedprecipitation and create a Chinese style piano polyphony. The research object of thisessay is the first kind.This thesis selects Jiangsu folk songs from “Chinese folk song piano polyphonicditty40songs” written by Chen Hongduo as the research subject. Based on the musicalanalysis on seven Jiangsu folk songs, including the history and brief introduction of theoriginal folk songs, the musical structure and polyphonic techniques after the adaptationof those folk songs, as well as related tips in performance, this thesis aims todemonstrate how Chen Hongduo integrated Chinese music and the Western musicaltechniques into one.Then it presents the positive role the piano polyphonic songs playedin the development of traditional Chinese music in the new era, as well as the importantinfluence of Chinese piano education.This thesis consists of four parts: introduction, including literature review, thesignificance and value of the selected topics and the solution of researched topics. Thesecond chapter demonstrates the musical analysis of seven Jiangsu folk polyphonicsongs. The third chapter focuses on the creative techniques integrating Chinese andwestern composition and the nationalized playing style. The conclusion, a summary ofthe thesis, puts forward the realistic significance of this thesis in musical study and inthe teaching of Chinese piano playing.
