Historically, Jiang Wei is a military general of the Three Kingdoms period of Shu Han, with the dominant image characteristic being intelligence-courageousness among generals. Chen Shou of the "History of the Three Kingdoms" has criticized Jiang Wei, though with praises quite outweighing the deficits. As to the Jin Dynasty literati with respect to Jiang Wei their evaluations have tended to enhance Jiang Wei’s intelligence-courage nature, and his extraordinary courage as particularly notable image features, though while too simultaneously bearing on Jiang Wei with criticisms. Thus although fettered within the official history of the Sui and Song Dynasties, his image still bore changes with the passings of time, markedly with Jiang Wei’s ideology and the Tang Dynasty literati’s pursuit of the emperor-loyalty ideology, perseverance and unshaken spirit, and simultaneously with Jiang Wei’s image in unofficial history accounts and poetrys, not only gradually had he became emancipated from the fetterings of historical accounts, but he gain positive praise. As an important turning point with the dominant ideology of the three themes of the Song and Yuan Dynasties as conveyed by "support Shu and against Wei", Jiang Wei image morph changed along with these ideologies having attained a completely independent literary character, and as revealed by the Song poetry that bore witness of compassion for the failure of Jiang Wei’s Northern Expedition.Within "The Popular Stories of the Three Kingdoms" not only does Jiang Wei attain as one of the main characters moreover his relationship with Zhuge Liang becomes more intimate, and even more so he is recognized as of qualities of the making of a good commander with overtones of bold wittiness and adeptness to change.During this period popular accounts of Jiang Wei’s image have a little free and gracious temperament, and this along with the author’s limited creative ability and compromised cultural quality, maybe of influence.During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Luo Guanzhong completed an artistic statuesque image of Jiang Wei, an image of a loyal leader bolstering the strength of the country, and as of the Confucian model of scholarly-commander possesing brave, or intelligence-coupled courageousness, along with persistent attachment to a spirit of tragedy. And thereafter, by way of Mao Zong gang’s editting of the literary works and by some ways of his increasing the readership and reviews, Jiang Wei’s image underwent enhancement by way of a praise of talents, a bolstering of Jiang Wei’s loyalty ethic, and strong promoting of his image of Confucian nobility ideal, and as a character thickly shrouded by tragedy.
